Can Architecture Change Your Mind?
That’s the question animating the work of Associate Professor of Architecture Na Wei, who studies the relationship between architectural elements and human perception.
Na Wei
Associate Professor of Architecture
“Neuroaesthetics is an interdisciplinary field that explores how aesthetic experiences—such as viewing art, architecture, or natural landscapes—affect our brains and emotions,” she says. “It seeks to understand the neurological basis behind our perceptions of beauty, art and design, combining insights from neuroscience, psychology and the arts.”

Community Development and Betterment
As the senior program officer for the Local Initiative Support Corporation, a community development financial institution and intermediary, Melissa Kim (MS ’10 City and Regional Planning) works to promote community solutions that are creative, cross-disciplinary and developed in concert with communities.
“For me, a community developer, I am particularly interested in socially engaged art’s capacity to lift up voices and visions of individuals and communities, shift perceptions and perspectives, build social connections, provide skills and pathways to jobs, transform neglected spaces and generally bring creative approaches to addressing persistent social challenges.”

Tyler’s Supportive Community and Critiques
Norah Gilbert (BA ’26 Art Education) came to Tyler thinking studio critiques might be one of the more challenging aspects of her education. Instead, she says:
“Critiques are actually one of the most fun, helpful aspects of studio classes. I’ve found that you receive far, far more positive feedback than criticism, and the criticism you receive is very constructive and growth based."
